The Viking sagas tell how the Vikings took Ravens with them when they sailed the North Atlantic and the North Sea. Tradition has it that they would release a raven to determine their location and possible destination. Once released, if the raven flew back the way they had come and did not return, they knew they were still close to the place they had just left. If the raven came back to the ship they knew there was no land in sight. A third possible outcome is said to be what kept them discovering new lands -- if they released the raven and it flew away from where they had just bee but did not return, they followed. According to the old sagas, this is how the Vikings found Iceland. |
